how to lay sod, tips for laying sod, sod farm florida | Grovin Farms | Gainesville, FL

Laying down sod is an exciting project! It gives your home or new piece of property a fantastic, refreshed, and attractive outlook. However, this project can be as delicate as it is exciting.

Poor or unsuitable soil conditions can stall your project or plunge you into huge losses. Therefore, it is important to understand the different types of soils and their properties, especially before you undertake a sod project.

Be sure to consider the following factors before laying down sod to increase the chances of your sod project’s success:

1. Soil Health

Test Soil pH
It’s good to test your soil’s pH level, as it can determine the success of your sod project.

Healthy soil is filled with live microorganisms that have a mutual and symbiotic relationship with your plants. Healthy soil is loose, has excellent moisture retention, and sufficient nutrients.

2. Soil pH

Changing weather can play a role in the soil’s pH level.  Soil pH is the degree of acidity or alkalinity in the soil, and is measured on a scale of 0-14. The ideal pH level for your sod project is approximately 6.5.

3. Preparation for Laying Down Sod

Before laying your sod, it is critical for you to ensure that your soil is well-prepared beforehand. Ensure the ground is level and clear the surrounding land of debris.

The general rule of thumb is applying herbicides a week before installation to eliminate all weeds. During installation, be careful to avoid gaps since they give room for weeds to grow.

4. Equipment to Lay Sod

Besides saving you from ‘back-breaking’ labor, using the right equipment guarantees you a fantastic outcome for your project.  Grovin Farms uses premium equipment to efficiently and safely install sod at your property.

5. Caring for Your New Sod

Because sod dries out quickly, try to water the new sod 2-3 times daily for a week to ensure proper root development.

Avoid mowing the area immediately, and stay off of the sod for at least three weeks to allow the sod to establish strong roots.
